چکیده
Reproduction is certainly the main mechanism by which to guarantee species continuity, being a result of adaptative processes determined by evolutionary pressures to improve offspring survival (Hartnoll & Gould 1988). Breeding period is defined as the time interval in which ovigerous females may be found. According to Sastry (1983), it is the result of the complex interactions of endogenous and exogenous factors. The endogenous factors regard the hormone control of molting and gonadal cycle. The exogenous factors are the environmental factors, specially temperature, photoperiod, pluviosity and food availability (Cobo & Fransozo 2003; Dı́az & Conde 1989; Sastry 1983). Factors like salinity and parasitism (Sastry 1983), and lunar cycle (Adiyodi 1988) are also commonly mentioned. The red mangrove crab Goniopsis cruentata is commonly found in mangrove areas, on the upper beach, in burrows or between mangrove roots, occupying most of the microhabitats in the mangrove ecosystem (Cobo & Fransozo 2003).

Ecological View of Limb Regeneration in the Mangrove Crab Goniopsis Cruentata (latreille 1803) (crustacea: Brachyura: Grapsidae), Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil
Studies focusing regeneration are incomplete without considering autotomy (Maginnis 2006). According to this author, autotomy is the process of limb loss, allowing multiple benefits to an organism (the most prevalent is predator avoidance), commonly improving the immediate survivorship. Factors such as contact with toxins and pesticides, long limbs stuck in crevasses during foraging, crabs harv...
متن کاملBreeding period in the mangrove crab Goniopsis cruentata (Decapoda: Grapsidae) in Northeast Brazil.
The brachyuran crabs are iteroparous species which present a high diversification of reproduction patterns, which may have evolved as a species-specific response to environmental conditions. Tropical species commonly present a year-round reproduction due to stable environment conditions. Goniopsis cruentata is a crab species widely distributed along the Western Atlantic, inhabiting practically ...
متن کاملFirst Zoeal Stages of Geograpsus Lividus and Goniopsis Pulchra from Panama Confirm Consistent Larval Characters for the Subfamily Grapsinae (crustacea: Brachyura: Grapsidae)
The first zoeal stages of Geograpsus lividus (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) and Goniopsis pulchra (Lockington, 1876), both obtained from laboratory hatched material in Panama, are described and illustrated. Geograpsus was one of the few genera of Grapsinae for which larval data were unavailable. Zoeal features are compared with those of other genera included in Grapsinae, and several shared morpholog...
متن کاملGill Na(+),K(+)-ATPase and osmoregulation in the estuarine crab, Chasmagnathus granulata Dana, 1851 (Decapoda, Grapsidae).
Some kinetic properties of gill Na(+),K(+)-ATPase of the estuarine crab, Chasmagnathus granulata, and its involvement in osmotic adaptation were analyzed. Results suggest the presence of different Na(+),K(+)-ATPase isoforms in anterior and posterior gills. They have different affinities for Na(+), but similar affinity values for K(+), Mg(2+), ATP and similar enzymatic profiles as a function of ...
متن کاملReproduction and management of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus (Crustacea, Brachyura, Ucididae) at Iguape, São Paulo, Brazil.
The mangrove crab Ucides cordatus is one of the most exploited crustaceans in Brazil. The present study investigated the breeding season of this species and the period of the "andada" phenomenon, when the crabs are active outside their burrows and perform agonistic behaviors. Furthermore related them to environmental factors, in a mangrove on the coast of Brazil, with inferences about managemen...
